This book is one of the first self help books I read. It was recommended by many book reviewers on social media and the fact that it was one of the best all time sellers I thought there must be some substance to it.
Having read the title in the first instance I got a “Get rich quick” scheme vibe to it. Some kind of shortcut to gaining wealth. Most of these kind of schemes tend to send you down blind alleys. I quickly learnt that this was a massive misconception on my part.
In fact I found this book to be revolutionary. This book made me reflect on my own life in a very serious way for the first time. It was like I had just woken up from a slumber. It made me realise that I had been living my life unintentionally. I was just going with the flow and therefore not in a certain direction or with a purpose.
Mindset
Any kind of achievement or goals starts with intention. The kind of intention also matters. If your intention is wavering then that is not going to work. The intention has to be laser focused.
It is for this reason that Hill talks about Desire. Through Desire comes the idea of planning and persistence. It is only with these that one can discover what their next step is and how they are going to execute it to move onto the next step.
Faith is the companion of Desire. Sometimes you will come up against obstacles and your Desire may waver. This is where Faith comes in. With positive affirmations and visualisation you can keep that Desire burning and keep you moving forward.
Subconscious/Autosuggestion
From Intentional actions one tends to transition to a Subconscious and Autosuggestion state. This will really accelerate your journey to achieving your goals. When you manifest positive thoughts and actions they become part of you and an everyday activity. This also removes the negative thoughts and actions that you may have had before walking on this intentional path. Doing this consistently will also result in your well being and enhancing your progress.
Planning & Decisions
Hill moves on from Mindset and Intention to Action. To move forward one needs clarity in their mind. Clarity comes from Planning. Planning is the roadmap and evidence of one moving forward. Without planning, there is the risk of repeating tasks unnecessarily or having to redo things due to bad planning. Planning also is the first step of establishing a system.
A key obstacle in moving forward can be the inability to make Decisions. This is understandable as people don’t want to make bad or wrong decisions. However, making wrong or bad decisions is the road to learning. Hill points out that Decisions can be changed further down the line but one must move forward in the first instance by making a Decision.
